It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of legendary musician, educator and
composer, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin.
Mícheál was a wonderful friend and supporter of The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland
and was a member of our Board of Directors for the last two years of his life, during which
time he made an outstanding contribution at so many levels. The young musicians of the
NYOI were privileged to have experienced and enjoyed numerous projects with him over the
years, including their unforgettable tour to the United Arab Emirates in 2011 with the late
Liam O' Flynn (see video footage below). Another highlight of the NYOI’s memorable
collaboration with Mícheál was our national tour in 2016 when the orchestra played a
programme of his beautiful music in Limerick, Wexford and Dublin. Mícheál was a true
world-class artist with an amazing generosity of spirit and without the slightest hint of an ego.
The Orchestra loved working with this incredibly gifted, articulate artist and magnificent
teacher. They cherished their relationship with this special man, who enthused them,
stretched them and helped them to reach for the stars through their playing.
Everybody at the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland has lost a friend and we all extend
deepest sympathies to Mícheál's family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who
knew him but his legacy will live on forever.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
